To drown Russia in the Black Sea: US containment plan

Americans want to stuff Romania and Bulgaria with missiles – Moscow and Ankara are categorically against.

While President Vladimir Putin, along with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, walked in the Siberian taiga, the United States did not doze and came up with a new plan to counter Russia. There, the US government analytical center RAND Corporation published a report on the strategy of “containment” of Russia in the Black Sea region. The concern of analysts is due to the fact that Moscow has recently modernized its Black Sea Fleet and increased its strength in the Southern Military District. According to American analysts, in order to counter the “growing Russian influence” in the region, it is necessary to deploy air defense systems and coastal missile systems in Romania and Bulgaria. Among other measures are the expansion of NATO exercises and assistance in developing the defense capabilities of Ukraine and Georgia.

Nothing new was heard in this report and, presumably, they did not immediately report to Putin and Shoigu about insidious plans – and so in the know, especially since the strengthening of the Russian military presence in the Black Sea region took place not without their participation. The voiced American plans were previously known, and NATO exercises in the Black Sea are held regularly. Their scale is not particularly impressive, at least without rocket fire, however, the Black Sea Fleet ships always maneuver nearby in response, than the NATO sailors are noticeably nervous.

  • The published report shows a clear trend towards NATO eastward expansion, – said military expert Vladislav Shurygin.

– From the Baltic Sea, alliance forces are actively developing the Baltic countries, Poland has provided its territory for the deployment of American military bases, and Romania is ready to accept rocket launchers. Now the Americans are persistently trying to extend their influence to the Black Sea region, including through the territory of Georgia and Ukraine, where they are already building naval bases for their needs. The anti-Russian military escalation stretched across the arc from Tallinn to Constanta, with the prospect of its extension to Odessa and Batumi. Such a peculiar “eastern front” is emerging with a large land section and two seas, in which, according to NATO plans, Russia should get bogged down in the event of some kind of armed conflict.

It is a purely American tactic to designate your military presence outside the United States, create hotbeds of tension into which a third country will be drawn, and then rise above the battle as peacekeepers. As it turned out, there are plenty of people wishing to fight with Russia. At the same time, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria are ready to act only under the guise of NATO, and especially the United States, by themselves weakly. They are promised support, primarily through the deployment of weapons that they are now ready to provide. But here you need to understand that for every action there is a counteraction – all military facilities that, to one degree or another, threaten the security of Russia, immediately find themselves in the sights. And the same, for example, Bulgaria estimated this probability of a strike and refused to deploy American missiles. The United States continues to systematically crush its allies and partners using the “horror story” of Russia’s military power and “aggressiveness”.

An interesting nuance of the current analytical report of the RAND center – it does not mention Turkey, which is a member country of NATO and, in theory, should be at the forefront of the “battle” with Russia. Ankara, in addition to everything, controls the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, which connect the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The Turkish fleet is slightly inferior to the Russian Black Sea, has powerful potential and could be considered as an element of counteraction to such a frightening “growing Russian influence”. However, Turkey is no longer given a special role, including due to the significantly warmer relations between Moscow and Ankara recently. Turkey itself, although it regularly takes part in the NATO Shield of the Sea exercises, expresses the security position of the entire Black Sea region and the resolution of any conflicts by armed means.

If we turn to history, then out of 13 official wars, the Russian Empire won 8 clear victories over the Ottoman Empire, suffered 3 defeats and two wars ended with a neutral result. During the Second World War, Turkey, being a supporter of fascist Germany, did not enter the war with the USSR. Being already a NATO country, it preferred a restrained policy and did not show aggressiveness in the Black Sea even with the support of US ships, which were frequent in this region. It is likely that even now the Americans are not particularly counting on such an ally in the matter of “containing” Russia in the Black Sea.

  • The United States has long shown an increased interest in the Black Sea, for some reason considering it a zone of interests for its national security, – says Leonid Ivashov, president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems.

– It is clear that this is primarily due to Russia, which is the main player in the region, and with the return of Crimea it was able to place weapons there with the help of which it is able to control both the sea area and the coastal countries where the US plans to deploy its weapons. Back in 2015, the Americans defined a strategy for controlling the Black Sea, but they do not know how to control the situation here. They lost many positions here, including due to the inability to justify military bases in Crimea, as planned. In fact, Turkey has already lost its ally, which could ban the passage of American ships through the straits in the event of some armed conflict, Ankara has such a right under the Montreux Convention. This also applies to foreign ships with nuclear weapons.

Now the United States sees a tactical move in deploying its missiles in Romania and Bulgaria, and in the future also in Ukraine and Georgia. Moreover, it can be not only defensive means, but also offensive ones – practically the entire European part of Russia may be under the attack of cruise missiles. To check the placed types of weapons is hardly possible. However, we also do not stand still and take measures of a defensive nature that cross out all US plans. It is necessary to take into account the factor that not all countries share American plans for deploying missiles in Europe, including in the Black Sea regions. Turkey, which does not need escalation in the Black Sea, is actively opposing this.
