To destroy the S-300

How can they neutralize Russian “Favourite” air defense systems in Syria?

On September 24, Israeli leader Netanyahu, during a call to Putin, called the supply of Russian advanced weapons systems to “irresponsible players” a great security risk in the region. This was announced by the office of the Prime Minister of the Jewish state.

Netanyahu grabbed the phone as soon as he learned of Moscow’s decision to transfer Syria S-300 systems to Syria within two weeks. At the same time, the Israeli prime minister told the Russian president that the bombing of the UAR would continue in any case – “Israel will continue to defend its security and interests.” He also promised to continue investigating the incident that led to the death of 15 Russian officers, although he does not doubt the report of his military. According to him, the culprit of the catastrophe is the “irresponsible side”, which Russia is preparing to help even more deadly weapons.

In response, Putin said that his government did not accept the statement of the Jewish pilots that the F-16 fighters did not use the IL-20 as a radar cover. The President of the Russian Federation once again emphasized: “the information provided by the Israeli military … goes against the conclusions of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The Russian side proceeds from the fact that the actions of the Israeli Air Force were the main cause of the tragedy.” It means that the responsibility for the catastrophe of the reconnaissance aircraft lies on Tel Aviv.

The Defense Ministry accuses the IDF of treachery, but Tel Aviv at point-blank does not see its fault.

Despite the formal promise to continue cooperation in the area of preventing air conflicts, the parties are determined. For both leaders, compromise on this issue is fraught with enormous political costs. The Western media, commenting on the growing Russian-Israeli contradictions, see this as, above all, the will of the Russian military, who insist on their findings, warning, apparently, some Moscow politicians against a different interpretation of the tragedy of IL-20.

Even before the official announcement of Syria’s S-300 Favorit air defense system, member of the defense committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Franz Klintsevich, pre-empted this news, saying that “we … have all the necessary resources to completely close Syria’s airspace for Israel.” After this statement, few who in Israel and the United States doubted that such a step would be implemented. The Pentagon and the IDF were wondering what steps would be taken by the Russian side in order to adequately respond to the new challenge.

And now, as it became known, Russia is ready to transfer to the army of the SAR two regimental complexes of the S-300, this, of the order, 24 launchers with 4 missiles each. In theory, such a number of effective ground-to-air interceptors should guarantee a safe sky over Syria. Even today, Assad troops with varying success are fighting off the Israeli air force raids with outdated C-125 and C-200 platforms, which were received in the 1980s. In any case, it is premature to talk about the “death” of the SAR defense after numerous attempts by the Western coalition to destroy the Syrian air defense system.

At the same time, the Assad government, in addition to the ZRK-300, also requested MiG-31 fighters, saying that the ground-to-air missiles alone were not enough. Israel has the technical means that minimize the risk of the destruction of their aircraft by ground-to-air missiles. For example, the smart anti-missile heat traps and laser systems developed by Elbit Systems from Haifa have proven themselves very well. One way or another, but the Israeli Air Force will have to act very carefully so as not to become a victim of the “Favourite”.

For Russia, this is exactly the case when it is better to overestimate the enemy than to underestimate. And while the Israelis are nervously reacting to any hint about the supply of S-300 Syria, it is logical to assume that the IDF has taken certain steps to reduce to no this potential threat. To sum up everything that Israeli and American experts say, the conclusion is that the Favorite systems carry a very serious, but uncritical, danger to Jewish pilots.

In response to the possible delivery of the C-300 Tel Aviv “most likely, the F-35“ Molniya-II ”planes will be put into action, since F-16 fighters-bombers of models A and B are no longer responding requirements of the time, as evidenced by the recent loss of one aircraft of this class – the first in 35 years of combat operation. ” Here, it is reasonable to listen to the words of Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who promises to destroy the S-300 with the help of the latest F-35 fighter and the “innovative bombs” Spice-250, allegedly with

specially developed against our systems. True, even in Israel there are authoritative critics of such a strategy to combat the S-300 air defense system. In particular, Moshe Arens, a former Israeli defense minister, a former foreign minister and ambassador to the United States, and now an aviation scientist with the rank of professor, is a critic of the capabilities of Lightning II in countering Russian interceptor missiles. According to him, the F-35 fighter is powerless in front of the C-400, and is highly vulnerable to the C-300.

His findings are confirmed by the program to strengthen the Israeli Air Force. It says that “the introduction into the Air Force of a significant number of F-35s is not a priority,” Tel Aviv puts on upgrading the later versions of the F-16 fighter, the last of which were delivered in 2006. As for the C-300, for the Israelis, more importantly, not so much their supply of Syria, but who exactly will control them. The same Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that “not in Russian hands” these complexes do not carry the threat (for the Israeli Air Force) that could have occurred if Russian officers were sitting at the control panels. It’s necessary to understand that for the Jewish state and behind him – America, the destruction of the “Favorites” set by Syria, is of fundamental importance. For them, this is not only a political and security issue, but a lot of national prestige and defense competition. Taking into account the capabilities of the Israeli Air Force and the “long arms” of the Mossad and the ANAN (Israeli military intelligence – auth.), It is possible that this time the Russian troops in Syria will be beaten in the back with ground sabotage and sleeping agents. Therefore, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation must take this factor into account.
