Several Russians are killed in Deir ez-Zor, Syria

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the information about the tragic incident in the Syrian Arab Republic. It is reported that four Russian servicemen were killed in Syria. Three more were injured and sent to a Russian hospital. Doctors  still struggle for their lives. The status of the wounded at the moment is not reported in detail.

The material says that the deceased were Russian military advisers who controlled the Syrian Army battery fire.

According to the updated data, the artillery battery of the Syrian army, in the location of which there were several Russian military instructors, was attacked at night by mobile groups of militants. Events developed in the province of Deir ez-Zor. The militants used pick-up trucks to “jump” and, according to Syrian sources, opened fire on servicemen of the SAA and the Russian Armed Forces from large-caliber small arms, mortars and grenade launchers.

Russian and Syrian servicemen took the fight. With the artillery fire, the militants were discarded, but attempted another attack from another direction. As a result of the battle, two Russians were killed on the spot, five more were injured in various degrees of severity – mostly fragmentation. The Ministry of Defense of Russia reported that during the night battle the fighters also suffered losses – at least 43 were killed.

What is known about the dead Russians? One is a sergeant who served under the contract. He was born in 1995. The second killed in battle – Lieutenant 1985 born from the Trans-Baikal Territory. Both are submitted to state awards posthumously. Data of the two soldiers who died of the wounds of the military are not yet given.

According to some reports, the incident occurred a few days ago.

In Chita on Sunday, two soldiers who were killed in Syria were buried. Two more bodies were sent to the Trans-Baikal region. Apparently, we are talking about the same military advisers, whose deaths were reported on Sunday by the Defense Ministry. Soldiers were killed in the shelling of the artillery brigade in the province of Deir ez-Zor.

The regional website “Chita.Ru” reports that the bodies of the deceased were delivered to the capital of Trans-Baikal on Sunday morning. The same edition names the names, age and titles of the buried in Chita: 32-year-old senior lieutenant Sergei Elin and 23-year-old sergeant Igor Mikhailov. They were buried in closed coffins.

During the day, unconfirmed reports began appearing on the Net that there were more dead. In particular, in the “VKontakte” group “Anonymous Army” a record was published that five Russians were killed in the battle, and one of them died in a hospital in Russia.

Novaya Gazeta made its own version: it was alleged that there were six dead – in addition to four servicemen, two people were killed from a private military company (PMC), Wagner, which “protects oil rigs” in he province of Deir ez-Zor.

Night fights with “tachanka” also happened.

In social networks there were reports that the battle, in which four Russians were killed, occurred on Wednesday, May 23. The Ministry of Defense does not specify the date and exact location of the attack. According to the military department, the night battle with Islamists in the province of Deir ez Zor lasted about an hour.

Battery was attacked by mobile groups of militants. According to the Ministry of Defense, jihadists used pick-up trucks equipped with large-caliber machine guns to “jump”. Experts compare these  with tachanka during the Civil War. In Russian Civil war there were famous horse-drawn machine guns, usually a cart with heavy weapon.

The militants opened fire from large-caliber small arms, mortars and grenade launchers. With artillery fire, the militants were discarded. In total, Syrian military and Russian advisers, who were on the position, managed to destroy 43 terrorists and six “tachanka jeeps”.

“Another five servicemen were injured and were promptly taken to the Russian military hospital. Military doctors fought to teh end for the lives of two wounded servicemen, but they could not be saved, “the Ministry of Defense quoted Tass. All the victims are presented to state awards.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. Media resources of terrorists issued a statement in which it is stated that about 15 military men, including Russian ones, were killed in the attack on the Russian-Syrian column and barracks “in the desert area” of the Deir ez-Zor province.

The province of Deir ez Zor where the battle took place is divided by to the Euphrates between Syrian government troops (Syrian Arab Army) and US-oriented detachments of Kurdish-Arab “Syrian Democratic Forces”.

On Thursday, it was reported that the US-led coalition inflicted air strikes on the positions of the Syrian army in this province. In the same areas in February, people from the PMC “Wagner” were  under the American bombing. The version of “Wagner”, we will note, has surfaced and now.

At the same time, desert areas in the south-west of Deir-ez-Zor and the strip on the left bank of the Euphrates from the town of Hajin are still controlled downstream by the Islamic state militants.

The Masar Press Agency’s Internet portal reported that it was Hajin who recently captured their shootings with the Syrian Arab army. Military expert Boris Rozhin in turn believes that the battle took place in those empty desert areas where the sweep of the gangs of ISIS continues.

In any case, we are talking about the territories bordering Iraq, said Semyon Bagdasarov, director of the Middle East and Central Asia Study Center, in a comment to the newspaper BBC. Although, judging by the reports of the Americans and the Baghdad government, ISIS is practically defeated in Iraq (the operation to clear the last enclaves was in mid-April), reports were received that the rebels retreating from Mosul are based near the Syrian borders.

Feeding from Iraq allows militants to make raids and attacks, similar to those that led to the death of our military.

The other day, the ISIS militants attacked pro-American “Syrian democratic forces” on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, Bagdasarov recalled. And despite the support of the Americans, the battle in the area near Hadjin was unsuccessful. In any case, it is not known about the losses among the jihadists.

The Syrian army and the Russian military failed to avoid losses, as the terrorist attack in the province of Deir ez-Zor was carefully planned and the militias operated very quickly. The four Russian military men were carefully planned, the fighters were well prepared and acted quickly. This was reported in an interview with the National Security Council by the head of the State Duma Defense Committee, former commander of the Airborne Forces Vladimir Shamanov.

Vladimir Shamanov, head of the State Duma Defense Committee: “Deir ez-Zor area is very difficult terrain, the artillery battery covered its sector. The attack that happened was planned in advance. The militants traveled on high-speed Toyota cars with large-caliber machine guns. ”

Shamanov also said with reference to the General Staff that terrorists were destroyed by battery protection. Most of the militants were killed from small arms and collective weapons.

General Shamanov also said: “Syrian servicemen who were on the battery and who carried out its direct protection, together with our military men, fulfilled their tasks with dignity. Unfortunately, we suffered losses – two died, two more died from wounds, and three were wounded. ”

43 terrorists and 6 high-cross-country vehicles with large-caliber weapons were destroyed. Shamanov called this a worthy result.

“The fact that the terrorists suffered such damage shows that the Syrian command and our advisers have achieved high rates in training the soldiers of the Syrian government army” , – added the general.

The general added that “the death of four Russian servicemen in Syria is the loss not only of relatives and friends, but also for the whole country.”
