Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Moscow is sympathetic to the security interests of the Jewish state, including with regard to the border with Syria after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoygu.
The main topic of the talks, which the participants identified, was the situation on the borders of Syria with Jordan and Israel, where Russia would like to fully use the existing agreements on de-escalation.
“Israel appreciates the fact that Russia treats our security needs with understanding, and especially with regard to Israel’s northern border,” Liberman quoted his press service.
“The continuation of our dialogue is extremely important, as well as maintaining an open line between the IDF and the Russian army on all issues on the agenda,” the Israeli minister added.
In particular, it was about the situation in Syria, as well as the actions that Israel is taking to prevent the transformation of Syria into an Iranian bridgehead.
The head of the military intelligence agency AMAN, Major-General Tamir Hyman, the head of the military-political department of the Ministry of Defense Colonel Zohar Palti and other representatives of the defense department also took part in the negotiations.
During the meeting, Avigdor Lieberman told Sergei Shoygu: “Israel appreciates the fact that Russia is sympathetic to our security needs, and especially in everything concerning the northern border of Israel. Continuation of our dialogue is extremely important, as well as maintaining an open line between the Israel and the Russian army on all issues on the agenda. ”
Recall, today the Israeli Defense Minister arrived on a working visit to Russia.
“The main focus of the talks was on ensuring that Iran and its satellites do not settle in Syria,” the Israeli Defense Minister said.
Earlier it was reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his last meeting that Russia would become the guarantor that the Iranian military will be significantly removed from the border of Syria with Israel.
The southern regions of Syria, adjacent to Israel and Jordan, are part of the de-escalation zone, which was established in 2017 by agreement between Russia, the United States and Jordan. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently announced that only government troops should be present there with an “eventual” withdrawal of all non-Syrian forces from there. According to him, the Russian side is now working on this issue with Jordanian and American counterparts.
The Israeli media claim that in Jerusalem they are not against presence of the Syrian army to the border, but they want guarantees of the non-presence there of the armed formations of Iran and its satellites, which are fighting on the side of Assad.
Liberman’s press service reported that the meeting lasted more than an hour and a half, from the Israeli side it was also attended by the head of the military intelligence AMAN Tamir Khaiman and the head of the military and political department of the Ministry of Defense Zohar Palti.
“In particular, it was about the situation in Syria, as well as the actions that Israel is taking to prevent the transformation of Syria into an Iranian bridgehead,” the press release said.
In October last year, Shoygu came to Israel, where he met with Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The main topic of the talks, the Israelis then also called the problems of Syria and the military presence of Iran there.
Netanyahu himself in recent days has repeatedly said that Israel will not be satisfied with the departure of the Iranians from the border zone and will continue to seek the full withdrawal of their formations from the neighboring state. Increasingly relying on military force to solve this task, Israel is interested in mutual understanding with Russia, whose aviation and air defense have been present in Syria since 2015.
