Putin is no longer the main

Trump appointed Netanyahu to “look” after Syria

Somehow, the attack vector in Syria changed imperceptibly – the Americans, albeit slowly, but leave, Russia conducted a partial withdrawal of its forces and sharply limited the activity of the VKS ( Aerospace forces) (the last more or less blow to the insurgents was recently struck on January 6 of the current year). Both Washington and Moscow declared the defeat of the ISIS- each country in its interpretation. It would seem that the next hot spot on the planet is about to become smaller, but this did not happen. The main “players” here were Turkey and Israel. No beginners, of course, in this armed conflict, but now it is Ankara and Jerusalem (Tel Aviv) that are achieving their goals in Syria.

Israel, which in recent years has only “fired” across Syria, directing fairly rare airstrikes and rocket attacks against militant targets of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in this country, has sharply intensified in hostilities. The last strike on the Iranian arms depot at Damascus International Airport on January 12, 2018, which lasted for 36 hours, became the largest Israeli Air Force operation recently. The head of the Jewish state, Benjamin Netanyahu, openly stated that “this reflects our determination to prevent Iran’s military consolidation in Syria and we are ready to intensify such attacks if necessary.” It is noted that the Israel Defense Forces these days hundreds of times attacked the targets of Iran and Hezbollah.

Netanyahu’s confession can be called unprecedented – Israel has always kept silent about hitting the territory of Syria before. And here the head himself does not conceal the fact of the aggression of his army and threatens to continue fighting further. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, American Donald Trump, and Turkish Regel Erdogan, who Trump is now facing ruin if he attacks the Kurds, could afford it. But the interests of these countries in Syria were clearly marked.

“Such a“ courage ”of Netanyahu is explained only by one circumstance – he was allowed to do this,” says the director of the Center for Technology Strategy Analysis, Ruslan Pukhov. – It is clear that he received a similar “go-ahead” from Trump, or rather not from him personally, but from the Israel lobby in the USA, which always forced some American politicians to act in the interests of Israel. And now Tel Aviv will try to use the situation with the maximum benefit for itself – to strike at Iranian and Hezbollah facilities in Syria. It is likely that this is a kind of “compensation” for Israel for the American decision to withdraw all its troops within two months, despite the fact that two main goals were not achieved – the final elimination of the ISIS to the east of the Euphrates, and the main one is to make Iran withdraw from Syria forces and subordinate groups.

Israel’s current actions are similar to the start of a full-scale war, during which its army is ready to act on different fronts – the other day they completed Operation Northern Shield on the border with Lebanon to destroy tunnels. In addition to a massive air attack on Iranian warehouses in Damascus, Israeli aircraft attacked two targets of the Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This activity of Netanyahu can be explained by the upcoming parliamentary elections in Israel itself, where the positions of the current prime minister are not so strong. So he is now killing two birds with one stone – undermining Hezbollah’s combat potential and strengthening its position in the Israeli political establishment.

Trump approved Netanyahu behaviour, this is understandable, but Putin and Erdogan were silent. Everything is clear with the Turkish president, he has his own problems with Kurds in northeastern Syria, and here he also seriously threatened Trump that he would not leave Kurds in trouble even after the withdrawal of American troops from this territory. At the same time, the United States is expressing concern about not only the possible actions of Ankara, but also of Moscow, believing that Russia might want to occupy territories in northeastern Syria. This is a very controversial issue – it is easier for Putin to negotiate with Erdogan than to allow an open confrontation with Ankara now. But the activity of Israel worries Russia to a greater degree. It must be assumed that Putin will still give an answer to the Israeli attack on the airport in Damascus.

The Russian president, indeed, has so far not responded to the latest attacks by Israeli aviation on the territory of Syria. However, if you recall Putin’s “fierce reaction” to the Israeli attack on weapons depots in the Latakia area near the Khmeimim airbase, during which the Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down and our servicemen died, now he will not keep silent either. Then, after September 17, 2018, Putin immediately made the decision to transfer the S-300 air defense system to Syria. He refused to accept Netanyahu, despite his requests. However, Putin’s reaction followed the death of Russian citizens, Israel’s shelling of Syrian military targets was condemned by others.

So, on December 25, 2018, Russia’s position on an Israeli airstrike on a military warehouse in the suburbs of Damascus was voiced by the official representative of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konoshenkov, calling it a “provocative violation of Syrian sovereignty.” Of the 16 missiles launched at that time, 14 were intercepted by Syrian air defense weapons, but two achieved their goal. The concern of the Russian side was also caused by the fact that rocket launches were made from the area of the Lebanese international airport of Beirut at the time when six civilian aircraft were landing there, two of which were in direct danger. Due to the presence of Israeli F-16s over Lebanese territory, they were not fired at by Syrian air defense missile systems, including the S-300 complexes.

The current strike by the Israeli Air Force on the suburbs of Damascus was also not particularly effective, although it was more effective than the previous one. According to reports of the Syrian military, they shot down most of the missiles, but could not knock out a single F-16 because of the short duration of their location over the territory of their country. What means of air defense were used to repel an attack from the air is not specified. It is likely that it has been done without the S-300, which has been banned to use it – Russia is wary that some of the “partner” aircraft could be shot down from these complexes. The trained Syrian officers have already been admitted to the control of these air defense missile systems, but their actions are controlled by Russian specialists, who have the facility not to launch aircraft, and it is allowed to shoot down.

Actually, the overflow of Putin’s “patience” due to Israel’s actions could result in the very go-ahead ’of using the C-300. He does not give it, perhaps also because Israel in Syria pursues its own goals in the confrontation with Iran and does not plan to divide this country or overthrow President Bashar Assad, who is actively supported by Putin. It is likely that Netanyahu felt this nuance in the moods of Moscow and is now praying to his god that his pilots do not hit a single Russian target in Syria.
