Kurds leave Manbij under the wing of Saudi Arabia

about changes in the alignment of forces in northern Syria

Reports continue to come about the redistribution of forces in northern Syria. Thus, Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Turkish Foreign Minister, stated that the Kurdish armed formations will leave Manbij until the end of this summer. During the transitional period, the city will be controlled by Turkish and American troops, and after it is completed, the government will move to a new administration, formed from local residents. According to the Telegram-channel “Bulletin of Damascus” (@NovostiDamask), “Democratic forces of Syria” (SDF) have already begun to evacuate their troops.

At the same time, the Turkish news agency Anadolu writes that the Kurdish “People’s Self-Defense Forces” (YPG) together with Saudi Arabia are creating a new armed formation under the control of the “Democratic forces of Syria”. According to media reports, the decision was taken at the last end of the meeting in Kamyshli by Saudi military advisers and representatives of Kurds. Checkpoints have already appeared between the cities of Khasaka and Kamyshli, where recruitment to the new group is being conducted. It is noted that the militants of the created formation will be paid a salary of $ 200.

Recall that earlier reported the meeting of representatives of the “Democratic forces of Syria” and military advisors of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan at the military base “Harab Ashk” in the vicinity of the settlement of Ain-Issa. As a result of this meeting, the Kurdish armed groups allegedly agreed to withdraw their forces from the cities populated mainly by Arabs: Rakki, At-Tabbi, Manbijah and others, so that the forces of the “Arab Coalition” could take their place.

Ambiguous situation that unfolds in the north of Syria, was commented by deputy director of the Institute of History and Politics of the Moscow State University, expert Vladimir Shapovalov. First of all, the expert stressed that the Kurdish armed groups had previously occupied the territories where the predominantly Arab population lives, within the confrontation with the “Islamic State” (the terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) and in the conditions of the vacuum of forces in the territory:

“However, the actions of the Kurds themselves provoked a lot of conflict situations and led to a sharp escalation of tension. In this situation, the most correct and correct way out for the Kurds is dialogue and withdrawal from those territories that are not a place of compact residence of the Kurdish community, because in these territories there are Kurds, firstly, are perceived by the local population as invaders, and secondly, not perform the function of protecting this land from terrorists.”

As the expert noted, in this situation there is a rather high danger that the withdrawal of the Kurds will not lead to peace and security in the north of Syria:

“These territories are part of the sovereign and independent state of the Syrian Arab Republic, and if the temptation to seize them arises from someone else, for example, from armed groups sworn by Saudi Arabia, this will not at all simplify the situation, but, on the contrary, make it more complex “.

According to the expert, behind these manipulations stand the United States of America, which aspire to weaken Syria as much as possible:

“Their maximum task is, of course, the overthrow of the government of Bashar Assad. But, in all likelihood, the Americans understand that this is impossible because of the support that the legitimate government is provided by Russia. Therefore, the United States is implementing the minimum task, which is the annexation of a number of territories with the creation of political and military structures controlled by itself. This task also has a second component – creating a zone of managed chaos and maintaining a conflict situation. ”

Proceeding from this, a certain agreement between the Kurds and the Arab states under the auspices of the United States is a way towards the separation of a certain part of Syria with the creation of pro-American structures on it:

“These are unacceptable steps. They contradict the sovereignty and integrity of the Syrian state and, consequently, the Charter of the United Nations, since Syria is recognized by world community. Therefore, these negotiations are not legitimate and will not lead to a calm situation, but will only lead to an escalation of the conflict and the preservation of points of tension. ”

Turkey is a very powerful factor of influence in the area indeed. It wanted the Kurdish forces to leave Manbij. And, of course, this can be viewed, on the one hand, as a definite victory for Turkey. However, the interests of Turkey and Saudi Arabia do not coincide. Moreover, at the moment Turkey and Saudi Arabia are on different sides of the barricades, despite the fact that both countries formally are allies of the United States. Their positions regarding the Syrian conflict are now dispersed. Therefore, attempts by Saudi Arabia to take control of the area in the north of Syria will enter into serious contradictions with Turkey, which is also fraught with conflicts.
