The West begins to give the civil war in the Donbass not the estimates that are expected of in Ukraine.
Apparently, the diplomatic dive between Budapest and Kiev has reached a new level. Previously, Ukrainian neighbors were mainly worried about the situation of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, the other day, the state secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, Tristan Azbey, announced a “civil war crisis” in Ukraine, bearing in mind the situation in the Donbass.
The Foreign Ministry was “independent,” of course, and couldn’t let such frank “sacrilege” pass by.
A representative of the Hungarian government was advised that such rhetoric was “unacceptable.” In addition, the Chargé d’Affaires of Hungary Cristina Marfi, who was strongly protested, was called to the “carpet” in the Foreign Ministry.
In particular, it was declared “categorically unacceptable” a situation where “high officials of a neighboring state call the ongoing Russian armed aggression against Ukraine since 2014” civil war “. In an ultimatum form, in fact, Hungary made it clear that, as a member of the EU and NATO, it should adhere to an official position on “Russian aggression” when it comes to Ukraine.
I must say, Budapest has not yet reacted to this harsh pressure from Kiev. And an attempt to correct the words of his government official in accordance with the “Wishlist” of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
But it is already clear that Klimkin’s former department will most likely continue to quarrel with neighbors in the “best” traditions of his former leader.
On the other hand, it is difficult not to notice the apparent duality of approaches to the same problem. The Hungarian Secretary of State, who told the truth about the civil war in Ukraine, was literally stigmatized by the “independent” authorities. But to his own oligarch Kolomoisky, who at one time also called the war in the Donbass a civil conflict, no one had any questions …
The very formulation of the issue with the requirement for Budapest to follow the “official position” is also interesting.
Kiev does not even hide that there is, it turns out, such a common “official position of the EU and NATO”, where Russia is recognized as an “aggressor” without any actual evidence of this very aggression.
Moreover, over the years, a variety of officials and officials in the West have made many statements that there are no Russian troops in the Donbass. We could not find them either from a satellite, or through tactical reconnaissance, or in any other way.
However, for some reason, nothing has changed in the “official position”, which Kiev is now blackmailing Hungary …
– Kolomoisky’s statement was ignored, because it is still the opinion of a private individual, – commented Oleg Nemensky, a leading researcher at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, a political scientist. – In this case, we are talking about the statements of an official person.
Plus, Ukraine now has very poor relations with Hungary – Budapest is strongly opposed to the infringement of the rights of national minorities in Ukraine. And this is precisely there the most painful topic, which is directly related to the Donbass conflict.
At the same time, Kiev is trying, at the level of official propaganda, the use of vocabulary, and even at the legislative level, to present an extremely distorted picture of what is happening in the Donbass. Allegedly there is no separatist movement at all, there is only “Russian aggression”. This point of view is legalized in Ukraine. But it is not shared in the West.
– Explain …
– There, mainly, it is about Russia’s support for local separatists. This is a completely different interpretation of events. And although in the wording about the alleged Russian interference in what is happening in eastern Ukraine, these two interpretations seem to coincide. When clarified, a huge difference is revealed.
Officially in the West, it is precisely the presence in the Donbas of the separatist movement and the assistance that is being provided to him from Russia. And what exactly does this help manifest itself in is the next question and a topic for clarification.
Actually, Ukraine itself officially, kind of like, shared this point of view when it announced the “anti-terrorist operation” (“ATO”). After all, if it was a question of the invasion of Russia, it was necessary to declare an operation to counter external aggression. That is, to declare war on Russia.
Ukraine has publicly announced that it is an “anti-terrorist” operation. True, it couldn’t legally indicate which terrorists it was conducted against. Since neither the DNR, nor the LNR, nor even the specific leaders of these self-proclaimed states are recognized as terrorists in Ukraine. And in the world, by the way, too.
But this was the official name of the power operation, respectively, the point of view on the conflict in the Donbass officially submitted to the international community.
Thus, Kiev itself affirmed at the international level the point of view that the West now adheres to. And now it is trying to convince everyone that there has never been a desire of residents to secede, but only “Russian aggression”.
But this point of view in the West was not accepted by anyone. And obviously, Ukrainian officials consider it possible to make such statements in order to support the current official mythology of this conflict for domestic consumption. Because if Ukraine does not respond to statements such as what the representative of Hungary said now, then questions may arise within the country. Why, say, the government requires its politicians and the media to describe the conflict differently than the allies describe it?
So, it is rather an internal problem of Ukraine.
It is appropriate to recall how, for example, Japan, every time Russian officials appear on the Kuril Islands, declares its official protest. This protest, of course, is not for the sake of Russia, but for domestic consumption. So that the Japanese themselves, who are concerned about the territorial issue, know that the government does not change its position regarding the issue of island ownership.
So it is here: the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry makes foreign policy statements, but for domestic consumption.
– How will Hungary behave, in your opinion? Recognizes a “mistake”? After all, there were cases when some changed their position after a strict shout from Kiev. For example, Deutsche Welle had to make corrections to an article where the conflict in Donbass was first called the Civil War. The British The Times fell into a similar situation.
– It’s one thing to put pressure on specific media – after all, these are not state structures. And here you can influence, again, not through official channels, but through the owners of these publications.
The blockade of Donbass turns to Kiev the opportunity to warm only dung or anthracite from Colombia.
A completely different matter is the official statement of the representative of the Hungarian authorities.
In addition, now the power in Hungary belongs to the extreme right-wing party, which generally quite aggressively resists, if I may say so, the all-Western, transatlantic and pan-European discipline. Especially on ideological issues.
It pursues a policy aimed at improving relations with Russia. And he very harshly criticizes Ukraine, for its domestic policy.
You know, to imagine that someone from the current Hungarian leadership suddenly began to make excuses, apologize for their point of view, it’s quite difficult for me. Rather, if Ukraine tries not only to make on-duty statements, but makes a scandal about it, it will receive an even tougher response from Budapest.
– And what, in your opinion, is behind today’s formidable tweet of the American embassy in Kiev, in which Russia is required to stop the “aggression” in the Donbass and leave the territory of Ukraine?
– It’s a completely banal statement, the Americans do it all the time. Especially, this is characteristic of the American mission in Ukraine. It is no secret that the US embassy not only actively supports the mythologization of the conflict in the east of the country, but also guides it in many ways.
So this is, in principle, on-duty rhetoric and on-duty phrases, which are released at any opportunity by American diplomats working in Ukraine.
