At the London summit, 29 NATO member countries agreed to “guarantee the security of our communications, including 5G.” Why is this fifth generation of mobile data transfer so important to NATO?
While earlier technologies were being improved to create even more advanced smartphones, 5G is intended not only to increase their productivity, but mainly to connect digital systems that require huge amounts of data in order to work automatically. The most important 5G applications will not be intended for civilian use, but for the military.
The capabilities offered by this new technology are explained by the Defense Applications of 5G Network Technology, published by the Defense Science Board, the federal committee that provides scientific advice to the Pentagon.
– The advent of 5G technology, which is currently on sale, offers the Department of Defense the opportunity to take advantage of the system for its own operational requirements at minimal cost.
In other words, the 5G commercial network, built and activated by private companies, will be used by the US military at a much lower cost than would be necessary for this if this network were created exclusively for military purposes. Military experts predict that the 5G system will play an important role in the use of hypersonic weapons – missiles, including those with nuclear warheads that move at speeds with Mach numbers above 5 (five times higher than the speed of sound). To direct them along variable paths, changing direction in fractions of a second, in order to avoid interceptor missiles, it is necessary to collect, process and transmit huge amounts of data in a very short time. The same is necessary to activate the defense in the event of an attack using this type of weapon. Since there is not enough time to make such decisions, the only way is to rely on 5G automated systems.
This new technology will also play a key role in the combat network. Due to the possibility of simultaneous communication of millions of transceivers in a certain territory, this will allow the personnel of the armed forces – departments and individuals – to transfer maps, photographs and other information about the operation to each other almost in real time.
5G technology will also be extremely important for special services and special forces. It will allow the use of management and espionage systems, which are much more effective than those that we use today. It will improve the lethality of killer drones and military robots, giving them the opportunity to identify people, track them and define them as targets based on face recognition and other characteristics. The 5G network – as a powerful high-tech weapon – will also become a target for cyber attacks and military operations conducted using new generation weapons.
This technology is being developed both by the United States and China, as well as by other countries. Thus, the international disagreement regarding 5G is not only commercial in nature. The military significance of 5G is almost completely ignored, because critics of this technology, including many scientists, are focusing on its toxic effects on health and the environment, which is caused by exposure to very low frequency electromagnetic fields. This interaction, of course, is of great importance, but it should be connected with studies of the use of this technology for military purposes, which are indirectly funded by ordinary users. One of its main attractive points, which contributes to the spread of 5G smartphones, will be the possibility of participating in a subscription to military games of impressive realism in direct contact with players from around the world. Thus, without realizing this, the players will finance preparations for the war, but this time it will be a real war.
